ARA-290 is a small peptide derived from the erythropoietin helix beta domain (EPO). EPO has long been known to have effects other than stimulating the production of red blood cells in the bone marrow.
In diabetic neuropathy, the glycoprotein, a protein made in the kidney, has been shown to stimulate blood vessel growth, promote cell survival, and alter blood pressure.
As an EPO neuroprotectant and pain reliever, ARA-290 does not stimulate the production of red blood cells.
For diabetes and autoimmunity, ARA-290 could be tested, according to studies. In addition, the peptide’s ability to alleviate neuropathic pain is currently being studied.
It is also being studied as a possible wound-healing stimulant, an immune-modulator, and potential systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus or SLE) treatment.
